Pete Moore is a retired airline pilot who built a boatyard with his then wife Camille, on the New Jersey shore, near Sandy Hook. Their son, David, was only four years old when Camille deserted them. Pete retired to run the boatyard and raise David.
In the early years of the boatyard, Pete built a sailing yacht, the Fools Reward. He wanted to cruise the world, but the boatyard and David took all his time. The story opens when David is eighteen and Camille suddenly reappears in their lives. Pete decides to drop everything and go cruising, to save himself and David. David reluctantly agrees to accompany him on the first leg of the journey to Montauk Point, Long Island.
Pete's friend Sal, and Sal's elegant but troubled wife Cira, join the cruise. The closeness of the small boat amplifies the clash of personalities. Pete and Cira become romatically involved and David jumps ship to join a group of surfers selling drugs. The situation soon spirals out of control, permanently changing all their lives.
